Cave Music

"I frequently found John 'Caveman' Knowles down at Carver’s Cave during these trips, where he sat with his guitar, composing music and practicing, often with other members of his band, called 'Cave Music.' Knowles played at the Turf Club ('Best Remnant of the 40’s') in St. Paul for many years. The band wore caving helmets during their performances. One of his albums, Banjo from Hell, had a photo of a burning banjo on the cover; it was actually a banjo that he sacrificed down at the cave one night, he confided. Once when I went down to the cave the whole band was there, complete with drums, cymbals, etc. I took my shovel and returned to clearing the drainage canals while listening to the jam session."
